ELLINGTON, Conn. - Senior David Renski (North Stonington, Conn.) shot an even par 72, in the third round, to finish at 221 overall and claim a tie for third at the Connecticut Cup, hosted by the University of Connecticut. The Sacred Heart men's golf team finished in a tie for fifth with a three-round team score of 913 at the 6,936 yard Ellington Ridge Country Club.
Renski shot a 75 in yesterday's first round and led the Pioneers with a two-over 74 in round two. He tied Central Connecticut's Dan Fanion with 12 birdies, the most in the tournament, and shot a tournament-best six-under par on par five holes.
Junior Leopoldo Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and sophomore Joshua Salah (Gloucester, Mass.) each shot a 229 for SHU. Garcia booked a pair of 75s in round one and two and recorded the most pars in the tournament with 38. Salah posted a team-low round one score with a one-over par 73.
Senior Andrew Storm (Endwell, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring for the Pioneers with a 236. Junior Joseph Serrantino (Cromwell, Conn.) registered a 240.
Iona took home the title with a team score of 895, followed by UConn-Blue (897) and UConn-White (900). American International (908) finished fourth and SHU tied with Hartford (913) for fifth.
The Pioneers return to action next month at the Fairleigh Dickinson Invitational on November 1 and 2.
