ZIONSVILLE, Ind. – After the first round of competition at the NCAA Central Regional, hosted by Indiana University, juniors Leopoldo Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and Joseph Serrantino (Cromwell, Conn.) have paced the Sacred Heart University men's golf team.
Garcia was just one-over with a 36 after the first nine holes before shooting a 41 on the back nine, while Serrantino booked a 40 on the front and a one-over 37 on the back. Both players birdied the par five 17th hole.
Collectively, the Pioneers shot a 319, 35 strokes over par. SHU sits at the bottom of the 14 team field, seven strokes back of Missouri-Kansas City (312).
Sophomore Joshua Salah (Gloucester, Mass.) shot an 80 (41-39), while senior David Renski (North Stonington, Conn.) scored with an 85 (39-46). Rounding out the day for the Pioneers, junior Jun Hardart (Warwick, Bermuda) finished the day with an 87 (42-45).
Earlier in the day the Northeast Conference announced its All-Conference selections and major awards. Renski and Serrantino were named to the All-NEC First Team. Garcia was selected to his third straight All-NEC Second Team and was joined by Salah, last season's conference Rookie of the Year. Head coach Matt McGreevy was also honored as the league's Coach of the Year, in his first season undertaking the reigns of the men's program.
Round two begins for Sacred Heart at 9:40 am when Hardart tees off with Jack Fiscus (UMKC) and Michael Powell (IUPUI).
