FAIRFIELD, CT (February 17, 2012) - The Sacred Heart men's golf team was picked to repeat as Northeast Conference Champions in the 2012 Coaches' Poll released by the league this week. The Pioneers received six first place votes in this year's poll as they try to capture their second-straight NEC title and their fourth trophy in the last five years.
Head Coach Matt McGreevy has a deep roster coming off a strong fall season as they get ready to defend their title opening the spring season at the Lonnie Barton Invitational in Savannah, Georgia.
After finishing just two strokes shy of the individual title (76-69-72 = 217) at the 2011 NEC Championship, senior Joseph Serrantino (Cromwell, CT/Xavier) is hungry heading into 2012. The Connecticut native had a strong fall season; earning NEC Golfer of the Month honors in October following two top-10 finishes. Classmate Joshua Salah (Gloucester, MA/Gloucester) also took home NEC Golfer of the Month accolades this past fall after finishing tied for the top spot at two different invitationals. As a junior, Salah was named to the NEC All-Conference second team after he notched two fourth-place finishes late in the 2011 season. Adding to the strength of the Pioneer lineup will be second team All-Conference honoree Leo Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista), who saved his best performance for last in 2011, posting season-low numbers at the NEC Championship where he finished in a tie for fourth (73-69-78 = 220).
