NEWPORT, RI (April 7, 2012) - The Sacred Heart men's golf team took six strokes off their day one score but couldn't overcome three teams breaking 300 as the Pioneers finished fifth at the 2012 New England Championship Saturday afternoon. SHU finished with a team score of 620 over the two day, 36-hole event.
The Central Connecticut Blue Devils shot 294 on Saturday to jump from fourth on day one to claiming the 2012 title. The University of Hartford carded a 297 along with Rhode Island to finish second and third, respectively. Fordham would finish fourth in front of the Pioneers with a team score of 609.
SHU shot a 307 on Saturday, six strokes better than their first 18 holes on Friday at the Newport National Country Club. Bryant finished sixth (642), Providence seventh (678) and Boston University eighth (716).
Freshman Sam Barber (North Bay, Ontario) was the Pioneers top-finisher, tying for seventh overall with a two-day score of 151 (76-75). Junior Josh Salah (Gloucester, MA) finished ninth overall with a 152 (75-77).
The Pioneers are back in action at the Rhody Invitational at the Green Valley Country Club in Portsmouth, RI on April 14th and 15th.
