FAIRFIELD, CT (May 7, 2012) - Thanks to his win at the Northeast Conference Championship last weekend, senior Leopoldo Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) has been selected to play in the 2012 NCAA Men's Golf Championship. Garcia will compete as an individual in the regional tournament in Greensboro, NC.
The NCAA announced the field for the NCAA Championship on Monday night with six 54-hole regional tournaments set for May 17th through 19th. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals. The finals are scheduled for May 29th through June 3rd at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California, hosted by the University of Southern California.
Garcia has been selected to play at the regional tournament hosted by UNC Greensboro. The NEC Champion Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers will also be competing there as the #14 seed. Auburn is the top-seed in the regional that will be played at Grandover Resort's East Course.
The senior posted a one-stroke win at the NEC Championship by posting a 54-hole score of 219 at this year's championship tournament at the LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Florida last weekend. Garcia carded even par 72's on Friday and Saturday and 75 during Sunday's final round to take home medalist honors.
Garcia played 24 rounds in 2011-12, averaging 75.5 (+4) per 18 holes on the season. He had three top-five finishes highlighted by his win last weekend. Garcia finished tied for sixth at the UConn Invitational where he carded his season-low score for 54-holes at 218. He opened the spring season with a second place finish at the Lonnie Barton Invitational hosted by LIU Brooklyn, shooting a 148.
