SHU's Garcia Shoots 74 on Day One of NCAA Regional
GREENSBORO, NC (May 17th, 2012) - Sacred Heart senior Leopoldo Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) sits tied for 24th on the leaderboard after the first day of competition at the NCAA Championship regional in Greensboro, NC. Garcia is competiting as an individual thanks to his win at the Northeast Conference Championship.
The senior lefty carded a round one score of 74, two-over on the par 72, 7,271 yard course at the Grandover Resort East Course. Garcia is tied for 24th overall in a field of 75 golfers. Matt Schovee from SMU leads the field, shooting a five-under 67 over the first 18 holes.
Garcia will tee-off at 10:00 am on the East Course back nine.
The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals. The finals are scheduled for May 29th through June 3rd at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California, hosted by the University of Southern California.
The senior posted a one-stroke win at the NEC Championship by posting a 54-hole score of 219 at this year's championship tournament at the LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Florida. Garcia carded even par 72's on Friday and Saturday and 75 during Sunday's final round to take home medalist honors.
Garcia played 24 rounds in 2011-12, averaging 75.5 (+4) per 18 holes on the season. He had three top-five finishes highlighted by his win last weekend. Garcia finished tied for sixth at the UConn Invitational where he carded his season-low score for 54-holes at 218. He opened the spring season with a second place finish at the Lonnie Barton Invitational hosted by LIU Brooklyn, shooting a 148.
