NEW BRITAIN, CT (September 9, 2012) - The Sacred Heart men's golf team opened up their season over the weekend in sterling fashion, taking home the team title at the CCSU Blue Devil Fall Invitational held at the Wethersfield Country Club. The Pioneers shot a 289 during Sunday's final round to hold off the host Blue Devils by one stroke for the team title.
Senior Joshua Salah (Gloucester, MA), the reigning Northeast Conference Player of the Year, finished second to lead a trio of Pioneers who finished within the top-10 on the leaderboard on the weekend. Salah battled the tough weather conditions on Saturday to shoot a 74 as the team totaled a 302 and finished day one in second place.
Salah came back on Sunday on a near perfect weather day and posted a one-under score of 70 on the board to finish the event with a 144, three strokes behind individual winner Monte Mullen of CCSU. Right on Salah's heels was SHU newcomer Peter Ballo who finished with a 145 thanks to a big Sunday. Ballo rebounded from a 76 on Saturday to shoot a 69 on the final 18-holes.
Sophomore Ross Kronberg (New Caanan, CT) finished tied for eighth at the event, shooting a 72 and a 76 over the the two days.
The Pioneers will compete at the Adams Cup in Portsmouth, RI on September 17th and 18th.
