FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's golf team was picked to win the Northeast Conference championship in a poll of the league's head coaches released on Thursday.
The Pioneers tallied six first-place votes, putting them ahead of Central Connecticut State and LIU Brooklyn. Robert Morris and Saint Francis U round out the top-five of the preseason coaches' poll. Defending Northeast Conference champion Mount St. Mary's was picked sixth.
Last season, Sacred Heart finished in fourth place at the NEC Men's Golf Championship. The Pioneers have won three conference titles in the last five years. Senior Josh Salah (Gloucester, Mass.), the 2012 NEC Golfer of the Year, leads the Pioneers into the upcoming spring season. He was Sacred Heart's top finisher in four out of five fall tournaments after having five top-10 finishes in 2012. Peter Ballo (Stamford, Conn.) also had a strong fall season, finishing second at the Hartford Hawks Invitational and third at the CCSU Fall Invitational.
The Pioneers open their 2013 spring slate with the Lonnie Barton Invitational March 10-12 at the LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fla. That same course will hold the 2013 NEC Championship May 2-5.
