SOUTH KENT, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's golf team wrapped up the first day of the Hartford Hawk Invitational at Bull's Bridge Golf Club in 10th place Monday. Redshirt-Junior Peter Ballo (Stamford, Conn.) was the Pioneers' low scorer through the first 36 holes, placing in a tie for 21st after a pair of three-over 75s.
Will Smittle (Scarsdale, N.Y.) bounced back from a first round 80 to shoot an even-par 72 in the second round, placing tied for 31st at +8. Jeff Cohen (Windham, N.H.) also carded an 80 in his first round, cutting three strokes off that round in the afternoon for a 77. A.J. Correia (Bedford, N.H.) had rounds of 78 and 79 on Monday, putting himself and Cohen tied for 55th.
Sacred Heart finished the day one stroke behind ninth-place LIU-Brooklyn. The Pioneers, as a team, improved by eight strokes from the first round to the second. Rutgers leads the tournament after two rounds by one stroke over Hartford. Loyola University Maryland is third followed by Temple and UConn.
The final round will be played Tuesday.
