PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – Peter Ballo (Stamford, Conn.) held on to his first round lead to win the individual title at the Rhody Invitational Sunday at Green Valley Country Club. Ballo carded a three-over 74 on Sunday to win the title by one stroke over Joseph Leavitt of Rhode Island.
All four golfers in Sacred Heart's scoring group finished in the top-20 for the tournament. Will Smittle (Scarsdale, N.Y.) had the Pioneers' low round on Sunday with a one-over 72, putting him in a tie for sixth at +8. Ross Kronberg (New Canaan, Conn.) carded a 77 in final round to finish +10 and tied for 10th. Jeff Cohen (Windham, N.H.) improved by five strokes on Sunday, posting a 75 to put him tied for 19th at +13.
The Pioneers had a team score of 298 on Sunday, five strokes better than their opening round on Saturday. However, Rhode Island improved by 21 strokes to move up from fifth place to first. The Rams had a team score of 288 and finished +29 for the tournament. Sacred Heart's +33 put the Pioneers seven strokes clear of Bryant, who finished third.
Sacred Heart plays its final tournament before the Northeast Conference Championship April 11-13 at the D-I New England Championship at Mohegan Sun Country Club at Pautipaug in Baltic, Conn.
