BALTIC, Conn. – Peter Ballo (Stamford, Conn.) held off a charge from Hartford's Evan Russell to win the individual title at the D-I New England Championship Sunday at Mohegan Sun Country Club, finishing the tournament at nine-under par and winning by one stroke.
Ballo carded a final round, two-under 70 on Sunday to win his second straight individual title. He won the Rhody Invitational last weekend. Russell made a run at Ballo with a six-under 66 but came up one stroke short with a two-round score of -8.
The Pioneers had a team score of 301 on Sunday after posting a 289 on Saturday. Will Smittle (Scarsdale, N.Y.), Ross Kronberg (New Canaan, Conn.), and A.J. Correia (Bedford, N.H.) each finished tied for 22nd at +9. Smittle had a final round of 78 as Kronberg shot 80. Correia had a final round score of 75. UConn passed Sacred Heart in the final round with a team score of 289, finishing second at +5. Sacred Heart was +14 as a team, six strokes ahead of fourth place Rhode Island. Hartford won the tournament with a team score of -5.
The Pioneers now prepare for the 2014 Northeast Conference Championship, held at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. May 2-4.
