DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.— The Sacred Heart University men's golf team opened its 2018 spring slate with a third-place finish at the annual BCU Gary Freeman Spring Invite on Saturday. The Pioneers finished the three-round event with a team score of 911.
SHU moved up five spots on the leaderboard and improved by 47 strokes from their score from a season ago at the event held at LPGA International. Bethune-Cookman claimed the top overall spot in their event at 29-over par. Fort Wayne placed second with a score of 33-over par as the Pioneers finished 47-over par.
Senior Matt Shubley led the Pioneers scoring group to open the spring, he finished the three-round event in fourth place at +7 (223). Freshman Saptak Talwar finished one spot behind Shubley at +8 (224) to tie for fifth place. Alex Manner tied for 15th with a three-day score of +16. Hector Gutierrez finished one stroke back at +17 over par to finish tied for 18th. Curtis Quinn rounded out the Pioneers scoring group at 33-over par and 37th in the event.
Sophomore Clifford Lindholm tied for 12th in the event at 14-over par as an individual. Freshman Jake Sullivan competed in his first event as Pioneer, finishing 24th at 21-over par. Seniors Tom D'Andrea and Connor Cunningham also competed as an individual, placing 27th and 31st respectively.
The Pioneers will stay down in Florida for spring break to compete in the Lonnie Barton Invitational beginning Monday, March 5 at LPGA International
