HAVERHILL, Mass. – The Atlantic Hockey Association revealed its 2010-'11 Preseason Coaches' Poll at the AHA Media Day in Rochester, N.Y. yesterday. Sacred Heart garnered 61 points in the poll and was picked to finish seventh, in the newly expanded 12 team conference.
The Pioneers' season ended with a loss to Rochester Institute of Technology (118) in the conference championship game last year. Sacred Heart finished regular season play 16-9-3, good enough to earn the two seed in the AHA Playoffs, and 21-13-4 overall.
RIT, last season's regular season and tournament champions, were selected to finish first in the poll. The Tigers received eight first place votes after becoming the first AHA team to play in the Frozen Four. Following RIT in the poll is Mercyhurst (101), in second, and Air Force (98), in third.
Niagara (82) and Robert Morris (82) joined the AHA this offseason and received an equal number of votes to finish fourth by the end of the season. Only two points ahead of the Pioneers is Canisius (63), in sixth.
Sacred Heart opens its regular season at Union on Friday October 8 at 7:00 pm. The first AHA game is at home against Canisius at 7:05 pm on Friday October 22 at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
