Pioneer Men's Hockey Opens Home Slate vs. Canisius

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey team debuts on its home ice tonight at 7:05 pm against Atlantic Hockey opponent Canisius at the Milford Ice Pavilion.  The Pioneers (0-2-0, 0-0-0) battle the Golden Griffins (2-1-0, 1-0-0) again tomorrow night at 7:05.

About the Pioneers... Sacred Heart struggled in the opening weekend of the season at #19 Union two weeks ago. The Dutchmen took both games from the Pioneers by a score of 9-0 in game one and 7-3 in game two. In Saturday night's game, senior Patrick Knowlton, junior Matt Gingera, and freshman T.J. Powers each scored. Sophomore goaltender Steven Legatto has started both games for SHU and has totaled 72 saves for a .847 save percentage.

Scouting the Griffins... Coming off a 5-2 win over Mercyhurst on Tuesday night, Canisius enters the series 2-1 overall and are off to a 1-0 start in the AHA. Senior Cory Conacher has busted out of the gate for three goals and three assists in the early going. Classmate Eric Rex has added a pair of scores as well as collected a pair of assists. Between the pipes, junior Dan Morrison has stopped 125 shots, for a .940 save percentage, and allowed only 2.62 goals per game. In their season opener, the Griffs stole a 5-3 come from behind win at Western Michigan.

Last Time They Met... Sacred Heart and Canisius combined for seven goals in the first period. In the end, the final score was 5-5 and each team walked away from the Milford Ice Pavilion with a point toward the AHA standings. The Griffins lit the lamp just 20 seconds in, but the Pioneers answered with a Dave Jarman score 14 seconds later. At the 6:46 mark of the second period Eric Delong put SHU ahead 5-3. The Canisius comeback was fueled by a pair of goals by Carl Hudson.

Vs. Canisius All-Time... The Pioneers hold a one game edge in the all-time series against the Golden Griffins. Since their first meeting in 1998, SHU leads the series with a 17-16-4 record. Last season Sacred Heart earned a 4-2 win and a 5-5 tie against Canisius. The last time one of these teams came away with a weekend sweep was in January 2007 when the Pioneers defeated the Griffins 5-2 and 4-0 in Milford.

Pioneers at Harbor Yard... Sacred Heart and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, the AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders, have teamed up to play five doubleheaders at the Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport throughout the season. The first game at the arena is November 6 at 3:30 pm vs. AIC. The Pioneers will also play games in Bridgeport on January 8 vs. Air Force, February 5 vs. Bentley, and February 20 vs. Holy Cross. The team's senior day will also be held at the arena on February 26 against Army.

Hockey at the Rent... On February 13 the Pioneers will face-off against UConn at Rentschler Field in East Hartford as a part of the Whalers Hockey Fest. The game is the first outdoor contest in program history and will be one of several games featured at the 10-day long event. Other games include a Hartford Whalers/Boston Bruins alumni game as well as an NHL Legends game to commemorate the 1986 NHL All-Star Game held at the XL Center (formerly the Hartford Civic Center).

Up Next... SHU gets back on the road at ECAC opponent Colgate at 4:00 pm on October 30. The Pioneers are winless in six tries vs. the Patriots.
