Men's Ice Hockey Returns to Arena at Harbor Yard This Weekend

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - This Saturday marks the second of five games for the Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey team at the Arena at Harbor Yard in downtown Bridgeport.  The Pioneers take on Atlantic Hockey rival Air Force at 4:30 pm, followed by an 8:00 pm contest between the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and Worcester Sharks.

SHU won its home debut at the Arena back on November 6 against American International by a score of 4-2.  It was the first win of the season for the Pioneers.  Sophomore forward Reid MacLeod (Teulon, Man.) posted the game winning goal on a power play opportunity eight minutes into the third period.

This weekend, Sacred Heart hosts Air Force at 7:05 pm at the Milford Ice Pavilion on Friday night before taking on the Falcons at the Arena at Harbor Yard.  Last season the Pioneers ended Air Force's season in the AHA semi-finals with a 2-1 victory at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, N.Y.  In that game, Sacred Heart senior captain Patrick Knowlton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) lit the lamp with 42 seconds left to send the Pioneers to the conference title game.

Sacred Heart University and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers officially announced their partnership for the five doubleheader ice hockey games this season in a joint press conference last November at the Arena at Harbor Yard.  City of Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch joined Sound Tigers President Howard Saffin and Sacred Heart Executive Director of Athletics C. Donald Cook and Head Coach C.J. Marottolo in making the official announcement.

The Pioneers will host an Atlantic Hockey Association opponent in each of the five games at Harbor Yard with match-ups set against American International College, Air Force, Bentley, Holy Cross and Army.

"This is an exciting time for our program" stated Marottolo.  "To forge a relationship with Howard, Bridgeport and the New York Islanders (NHL affiliate of the Sound Tigers) is very exciting not just for me both most importantly for our players.  When they heard this opportunity was on the horizon, I saw their eyes light up and big smiles on their faces.   To have the opportunity to play in a venue like this, a top-facility not only in New England but in the country to have hockey, they can't wait to get out there."
