Pioneers Beat AIC 4-2 in First Home Game at Arena at Harbor Yard
(Bridegeport, CT) - Reid MacLeod (Teulon, MB) scored a tie-breaking third-period power play goal that proved to be the game-winner in the Sacred Heart Pioneer men's hockey team's first win on the season, 4-2 over the AIC Yellow Jackets at the Arena at Harbor Yard.
MacLeod one-timed a feed in the low-slot from David Berube (Quebec, QU) at the 8:07 mark of the third, with Ben Ketchum (Greenwich, CT) earning the secondary assist. The Pioneers tied the game late in the second on a similar goal by Matt Gingera (Winnipeg, MB), who one-timed a pass in the low slot from Patrick Knowlton (Colorado Springs, CO) to knot the game up at two with 54 seconds to go in the period. The Pioneers finished 2-6 on the power play.
The Yellow Jackets took a little less than a minute to tie and go-ahead in the second, when Nick Campanele scored at the 12:44 mark and Jon Puskar followed with a tip-in off a Mike Little shot at 13:42. The Pioneers scored first just 2:59 into the game when Evan Mladenoff (Leawood, KS) scored on backhander after a great lead feed from Anthony Yelovich (Little Falls, NJ), with Alex Stuart setting it up for the secondary assist. They bookended the scoring when Eric DeLong (Oakville, MB) put in the final goal on an empty net on a nice drop pass from Berube, who chased the puck down in the offensive zone for his second assist of the game.
Steven Legatto (Kelowna, BC) made 27 saves in the victory, as Sacred Heart outshot AIC 34-29 for the game.
"It's great for our guys to play here, hopefully we can build off this," said head coach C.J. Marottolo.
The Pioneers begin a two-game weekend series at Robert Morris, Friday, November 12 at 7:00 p.m.
