(Potsdam, NY) – The Clarkson Golden Knights completed a two-game weekend sweep of the Sacred Heart Men's Hockey team, defeating the Pioneers 5-2.
Clarkson jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the first, but the Pioneers fought back to cut the deficit to one before the intermission. Ben Sexton opened the scoring on the power play 2:26, with Allan McPherson and Sam Labrecque picking up assists. Corey Tamblyn added another just 31 seconds later, set up by Will Frederick and Jake Morely. Luke Oakley made it 3-0 at 10:53, aided by Joe Zarbo and Nick Tremblay.
However, the Pioneers answered just 28 seconds later with their first goal of the season, scored by Neil Fachini (East Hampton, CT). Brian Sheehan (St. Louis, MO) and Ben Lake (Calgary, AB) recorded their first collegiate points with the assists. Matt Gingera (Winnipeg, MB) brought SHU within one with a shorthanded goal at 14:59, with Drew George (Regina, SK) also picking up his first collegiate point with the assist.
The Golden Knights regained a two-goal lead in the second, taking advantage of a five-minute major to Chad Barthelmess (Norristown, PA) with a power-play goal by Julien Cayer at 7:56. Andrew Himelson and Matt Zarbo earned the assists on the goal, coming right as a two-man advantage for Clarkson expired. Oakley scored his second of the night and the Golden Knights' third power play goal of the game at 14:23 of the third, set up by McPherson and Sexton for an insurance goal.
Sacred Heart begins Atlantic Hockey action Tuesday, October 25 in their home opener at the Milford Ice Pavilion at 7:05 p.m. when they take the ice next.
