(Milford, CT) – Steven Legatto (Kelowna, BC) made 34 saves in another solid start, but Sacred Heart Hockey fell 2-1 to Army on Armistice Day before a hearty hockey crowd at the Milford Ice Pavilion Friday night.
Sacred Heart kept up a solid forecheck all night, but Ryan Leets stopped 23 of 24 SHU shots. The game remained a scoreless tie almost halfway through the game until Zak Zaremba scored on a rebound off a wrist shot from the point by Maurice Alvarez thanks to Danny Colvin's faceoff win.
In the third period, freshman Maurice Alvarez scored his first collegiate goal, putting the Black Knights up 2-0 on an assist from his older brother senior Marcel Alvarez. Marcel shot the puck on a rush up the ice on the power play, taking a feed from Andy Starczewski for an open shot from inside the left point. Legatto made the stop on the initial shot, but the long rebound to the right wing found Maurice for a look at the open net at 7:03.
Moments later, SHU responded on a rush of their own, with captain Eric Delong (Oakville, MB) knocking in the rebound on an end-to-end rush and wrister by Jordan Ciccarello (New Hartford, CT) just 1:08 later to cut the Pioneer deficit to 2-1.
Army tightened up its defense enough to stave off a Pioneer comeback, earning the first victory of the season for the West Pointers. Sacred Heart remains in search of its first win in Worcester, MA on Saturday night, as the Pioneers take on the Crusaders in another conference battle.
