Sacred Heart Pioneers vs. Yale Bulldogs

Setting the Scene… The Pioneers host the #8 nationally ranked Yale Bulldogs in the first of eight home games at Webster Bank Arena. Both teams played UConn in their most recent action, with SHU falling 8-3 to the Huskies in Storrs last Wednesday and the Bulldogs prevailing 5-3 in New Haven this past Saturday.

About the Pioneers… Freshman Brian Sheehan leads SHU with five goals and nine points. He and junior captain Eric Delong are tied for the team lead with four assists. Sheehan leads all Atlantic Hockey rookies in goals as well. Steven Legatto has seen the majority of time in net this year, making the fifth most saves in the AHA (214). SHU is in search its first win of the season.
About the Bulldogs… Senior captain Brian O'Neill leads the Bulldogs with three goals and six points. Junior forward Andrew Miller leads the team with five assists. Both made the All-ECAC First Team last season. O'Neill has 123 career points. Jeff Malcolm has started all seven of Yale's games, going 5-1-1 with a 1.56 GAA and a .950 save percentage.
Yale-SHU Connection… Geographically, Yale is Sacred Heart's closest opponent. The coaching staffs are very familiar with each other as well. SHU head coach C.J. Marottolo spent 13 years as an assistant before taking the head job at Sacred Heart three years ago. Yale assistant Dan Muse spent one year as an assistant at Sacred Heart under former head coach Shaun Hannah and took the job at Yale when Marottolo came to SHU.
Last Time Out…Sacred Heart lost 8-3 at UConn last Wednesday night, 11/16. Drew George, Tye Lewis, and Ben Ketchum all scored for SHU. The Pioneers gave up 48 shots and goal. Steven Legatto made 29 saves on 33 shots in 32:18 in net. Andrew Bodnarchuk stopped 11 of 15 shots in 27:42 in net.
All Time vs. Yale… This is the third consecutive year the Pioneers and Bulldogs face off on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Yale has won both previous contests. Last season, Yale beat SHU 5-1 behind two goals by Chad Zeigler. Steven Legatto made 39 saves in that game. This is the first time the match-up won't be played at Ingalls Rink. However, the Bulldogs are familiar with Webster Bank Arena, where they played in the 2009 and 2011 NCAA East Regional Tournaments.
Up Next...Sacred Heart hosts the Niagara Purple Eagles for a pair of Atlantic Hockey games this weekend. On Saturday, November 26th SHU will take the ice against Niagara at 4 pm and turn around to meet again on Sunday at 6 pm following the Souond Tigers and Manchester game.
