Men's Hockey Comes Up Short at Dartmouth 4-1
(Hanover, NH) – The Sacred Heart Men's Hockey team lost 4-1 to the Dartmouth Big Green in a non-conference match-up Sunday afternoon at Thompson Arena.
Dartmouth jumped on the board first at 4:17 of the first on a goal by Doug Jones, assisted by Eric Robinson and Matt Linblad. About four minutes later, Drew George (Regina, SK) tied the game for Sacred Heart, knocking in a goal-mouth pass from Ben Lake (Calgary, AB). Brian Sheehan (St. Louis, MO) also assisted on the game-tying goal at 8:12. However, Eric Neiley knocked in what proved to the game-winner, ringing a wrist shot under the cross bar at 13:22 of the first.
The Pioneers played the Big Green nearly even in the second, but Tyler Sikura snuck in a near-side wrist shot from the left wing to make it 3-1 Dartmouth at 10:05 of the second. The goal came moments after the Pioneers nearly tied it on a two-on-one break with Eric Delong (Oakville, MB) and Torin Snydeman (Groton, MA), but were unable to convert. Tye Lewis (Vancouver, WA) also had a couple of good short-handed opportunities in the period, only to be denied twice by Big Green goalie Cab Morris.
Steven Legatto (Kelowna, BC) made 34 saves in the game, but when he was taken off for an extra attacker on a SHU power play late in the third, Jesse Beamish sealed the game with an empty net goal off the face off in the Dartmouth zone.
The Pioneers are of for the remainder of the semester, and resume play on January 6 on the road against Mercyhurst at 7:00 pm.
