(Fairfield, CT) - Matt Gingera, Sacred Heart Men's Hockey Assistant Captain and leading scorer this past season, has signed a professional contract with the Chicago Express - the ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets.
One of the most prolific scorers in Pioneer Hockey history, Gingera is fourth all-time on the career goals list with 61 and tied for eighth on the all-time points list with 109. He led the Pioneers in 2011-12 with 17 goals, 16 assists, and 33 points - his highest season point total and second-highest season goal total.
"It's a wonderful accomplishment that Matt has the opportunity to continue to play hockey at the professional level," said Sacred Heart head coach C.J. Marottolo. "Its an attribute to his hard work and deidication. He has worked hard on the little things in his game. Matt can score goals, and scoring goals cannot be taught. We at Sacred Heart are all very proud of him."
The winger finished his senior season strong, recording 16 points over his final nine games. His senior season highlights include a hat trick and an assist in a 4-2 playoff win at Bentley on March 3, an overtime game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over UConn on February 12, and becoming the 11th player in program history to record 100 points with a goal in a 5-3 win over Army on Senior Night on February 25.
