Men's Hockey Loses 4-3 to St. Thomas in Exhibition
(Milford, CT) – The Sacred Heart Men's Hockey team lost 4-3 to St. Thomas University on Sunday afternoon at the Milford Ice Pavilion in the lone pre-season exhibition game for the Pioneers.
St. Thomas wasted little time getting on the board in the first, with Stephan Sanza converting on a one-timer in transition 14 seconds after the opening faceoff, set up by Jonathan Bonneau. Alex Labonte snuck down the right wing and cut to the front of the net to make it a 2-0 lead on the power play at 4:14, with Sebastian Bernier and Marc-Andrew Levesque earning the assists.
The Pioneers, however, reeled off three straight goals to take the lead. Ben Lake (Calgary, AB) put the Pioneers on the board at 8:29. Nick Curry (Augusta, GA) chipped the puck from the right corner to the left, where Brian Sheehan (St. Louis, MO) took it and centered to the slot to set up Lake. SHU tied it at 13:06 on the power play on a goal by Jacob Brightbill (Anneville, PA), who sent a wrist shot toward goal that deflected in off a St. Thomas defenseman. Chad Filteau (Regina, SK) won a faceoff to Kyle Verbeek (Bloomfield, MI) who sent it back to the point for the shot.
In the second period, Beau Walker (West Richland, WA) gave the Pioneers their first lead at 15:46, with Eric Delong and Alex Stuart setting him up. However, Bonneau tied it for St. Thomas at 6:39 of the third, with Stephan Sanza and Randy Cameron getting the helpers. John McDonald scored the game winner with an unassisted goal at 15:30.
SHU rotated three goalies in the exhibition, with Steven Legatto (Kelowna, BC) stopping all ten shots he faced in the second.
Sacred Heart opens the 2012-13 season Friday night, Oct. 12 when the Pioneers travel to faceoff with the Providence Friars of Hockey East at 7:00 pm.
