Men's Hockey Downed by Providence 8-2 on Opening Night

(Providence, RI) – Eric Delong (Oakville, MB) and Drew George (Regina, SK) scored, but the Sacred Heart Men's Hockey team lost 8-2 in the season opener on the road against the Providence Friars.

The Pioneers played a solid first period, limiting the Friars to one goal on Mark Jankowski's first of the night.  He cruised through the slot and took a pass from Noel Acciari, wristing it inside the far post at 3:15.

Providence exploded in the second for four goals to open up a comfortable lead.  Ross Mauermann streaked down the left wing, took the puck wide, and scored a wraparound goal at 6:53.  Stefan Demopoulos scored another from behind the next, sneaking in a bank shot of the goaltender Andrew Bodnarchuk (Saskatoon, SK) at 8:48.  Demopoulos scored again on a transition slap shot along the ice and inside the far post at 10:52.  Jankowski netted his second, picking the glove-side top shelf of Steven Legatto (Kelowna, BC), who came on in relief.

After Paul De Jersey scored an unassisted goal 1:47 into the third, SHU answered with its first goal of the game.  Delong crashed the next on a centering feed from Beau Walker (West Richland, WA) to knock in the loose puck.  George also earned an assist on the play.  After a Shane Luke goal for PC at 16:28, George scored a power play goal on a centering feed from Walker on the left that Delong tipped over to him.  Kyle Murphy added a rebound goal with 23 seconds remaining for the Friars.

Delong, George, and Walker all registered two points each.  For the freshman Walker, they were the two assists were the first points of his collegiate career.  Bodnarchuk finished with 29 saves, while Legatto stopped 22 shots against a Friar attack that outshot the Pioneers 59-26.
