(Bridgeport, CT) – The Sacred Heart Men's Hockey team gave up four second-period goals en route to a 6-3 loss to Holy Cross at Webster Bank Arena on Sunday afternoon.
SHU took the game's first lead when Brian Sheehan (St. Louis, MO) scored on a stick-side shot from the slot at 4:17. Josh Phillips (Toronto, ON) started the play with a stretch pass up the near-side boards, which Ben Lake (Calgary, AB) tipped at the blue line into the middle to send Sheehan in for the opportunity. However, Holy Cross answered 47 seconds later when Mike McNamera accepted a turnover at the blue line to walk in on a breakaway for a far-side wrist shot.
The Crusaders reeled off three unanswered goals in the second period to take a commanding lead. Shane Stockton gave the Crusaders the lead at 6:03, set up by Evan Zych and Nilan Nagy. Kyle Fletcher roofed a wrist shot 46 second later, coming out in front from behind the net after passes from Castan Sommer and Erik Vos.
The Pioneers cut the deficit in half on a goal in transition from Ben Ketchum (Greenwich, CT), sent in on feed on a the attack from Eric Delong (Oakville, MB) and Jacob Brightbill (Anneville, PA). However, Holy Cross reestablished a three-goal lead with 47 seconds left in the second by Castan Sommer, assisted by Fletcher.
Tim Driscoll scored the Crusaders' sixth goal at 3:57 of the third, with the assist going to Tommy Dweyer. Moments later, SHU responded with an unassisted goal by Mitchell Stretch (Saskatoon, SK), who one-timed a clearing attempt out of the zone by Holy Cross at 4:13. That was as close as the Pioneers would get, as they will now seek their first win of the season on Friday, November 16 in West Point, NY against Army.
