Men's Hockey Loses 5-3 at RIT

(Rochester, NY) – The Sacred Heart Men's Hockey team lost 5-3 to the RIT Tigers Friday night at Ritter Arena.

The Tigers set the tone in the first period, outshooting SHU 22-7 and scoring the game's first two goals within 38 seconds of each other.  Mike Colavecchia chipped in a rebound off a shot from Nolan Descoteaux at 15:10.  Adam Hartley made it a two-goal lead at 15:48, knocking in a goal mouth pas from Dan Schuler.

The Tigers stormed out in the second period as well, working the puck in their offensive zone until Colavecchia nudged in a sliding puck that snuck through Steven Legatto (Kelowna, BC) following a one-on-one opportunity by Alexander Kuqali 1:19 into the period.

The Pioneers responded at 3:37 on a goal by Ben Ketchum (Greenwich, CT).  Chad Filteau (Regina, SK) won the faceoff forward to himself, grabbing the puck in the corner and cycling behind the net to Kyle Verbeek (Birmingham, MI), who then hit Ketchum with centering pass.  Kuqali got that one back at 13:39, set up by Colavecchia and Josh Mitchel.  Once again, SHU cut the deficit at 18:21 on a two-man advantage goal by Mitchell Stretch (Saskatoon, SK).  He teed up a one-timer set up by Brian Sheehan (St. Louis, MO) and Jared Eng (West Vancouver, BC) that rang under the crossbar, ending a period in which SHU outshot RIT 15-6.

After 17:42 of scoreless hockey in the third, Ben Lake (Calgary, AB) brought SHU within one with a shorthanded goal, stealing a pass at the blue line in the defensive end and racing the length for a breakaway.  However, the momentum disappeared eight second later when RIT came back off the ne next face off, with tick-tack-toe passes from Brad Shumway to Kuqali to Brad McGowan, who scored from the right faceoff dot on the power play to close the scoring at 17:56.

RIT outshot SHU 44-28 for the game, including 16-6 in the third.  The Pioneers look to rebound Saturday, December 8 at 7:05 in the conclusion of the weekend two-game series at RIT.
