Pioneers Return Home for Two-Game Series Against Canisius

Setting the Scene...The Sacred Heart Pioneers return home for a two-game Atlantic Hockey Association showdown with the Canisius Golden Griffins. The Pioneers are looking to tack onto their two points in the AHA, and are still looking for their first win of the season. SHU is the only team in Division I without a victory. Canisisus currently sits in fifth place in the AHA, looking to add to their 12 conference points.

Pioneers in AHA Play...The Pioneers are 108-117-31 in this their tenth year of play in the Atlantic Hockey Association.  While they are looking for their first AHA title, they have been to the conference championship twice, falling 4-0 to Holy Cross in the inaugural season of 2003-04 and 6-1 to RIT in 2009-10.  SHU posted its best conference record in 2005-06, when the Pioneers went 18-8-2 in AHA play.  

Delong and Sheehan Lead the Way...Seniors Brian Sheehan and Eric Delong lead the team in points, with 15 and 16 respectively. Sheehan's nine game point streak was snapped over the weekend in a 6-2 loss at Colgate.

Delong Hits 100...Senior captain Eric Delong registered a goal and an assist in a 5-2 loss to RIT on December 8th, giving him 100 points for his career. He is the 12th player in program history to reach 100 for his career. Delong now has 102 points.

Last Time Out...The Pioneers were swept in a two-game series at ECAC member Colgate by a combined score of 15-2. The Pioneers fell 6-2 on friday night and 9-0 on saturday night. The 9-0 defeat marked the second time this season the Pioneers were shutout and the most goals they have given up all year.

Legatto All-Time SHU Saves Leader...No goalie in SHU Hockey history has stopped more pucks than Steven Legatto, who broke the all-time SHU Saves record last year.  He has 3,026 saves in his career.

Scouting the Golden Griffins...Canisus currently sits in fifth place in the Atlantic Hockey Association with a 5-4-2 conference record. The Golden Griffs are 4-3-1 in their last eight games, boasting wins over conference foes UCONN, AIC, and Army during that stretch. They are especially impressive on defense, only giving up 1.85 goals per game, thats ranks first in the AHA.

All-Time vs. Canisius...SHU is 17-19-5 all-time against Colgate. They last met last season on January 22nd 2012, a 4-3 win for Canisius in Buffalo. Sacred Heart last beat the Golden Griffs on January 22, 2010, by a score of 4-2 at Sacred Heart.
