MILFORD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's hockey team dropped the second game of its weekend series with the American International Yellow Jackets 9-1 at Milford Ice Pavilion. Senior captain Eric Delong (Oakville, MB) tallied the lone Pioneers goal on the power play with assists from Ben Ketchum (Greenwich, Conn.) and Brian Sheehan (St. Louis, Mo.).
AIC (9-14-5, 6-11-5 AHA) got on the board first 1:15 into the game when Adam Pleskach knocked in a power play goal. Sacred Heart (0-26-2, 0-19-2) hung with the Yellow Jackets for the remainder of the period, despite being outshot 10-5. The Yellow Jackets tacked on two more goals early in the second period to take a 3-0 lead before Delong's power play tally at the 9:21 mark made the score 3-1. AIC scored twice more to end the second period to take a 5-1 lead, and added four more in the third.
The Yellow Jackets outshot Sacred Heart 32-26 for the game. The Pioneers were 1-for-8 on the power play while AIC was 1-for-4 with the extra man. Ben Meisner made 25 saves for AIC while the combination of Fredrik Melander (Uppsala, Sweden) and Steven Legatto (Kelowna, BC) had 23 for the Pioneers.
Sacred Heart is back in action at the Milford Ice Pavilion on Tuesday, Feb. 19 when the Pioneers host the Holy Cross Crusaders. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
