Men's Hockey Announces New Assistants
FAIRFIELD, CT (June 14, 2013) - Sacred Heart head men's hockey coach C.J. Marottolo announced the addition of Joel Beal and Jared Waimon as assistant coaches for the 2013-14 season.
"I am very pleased to add Joel and Jared to our staff," commented Marottolo. "Both will bring great knowledge and enthusiasm to our program. I know our players will love working with them on a daily basis."
Beal joins Coach Marottolo's staff after spending the past two seasons as an assistant at his alma mater Union College. He helped guide Union to the ECAC Championship this past season as the Dutchmen advanced to the 2013 NCAA East Regional Finals.
Before joining the Union staff, Beal served as the assistant coach of the Varsity Prep League team at Albany Academy. Beal led recruiting efforts and worked with the forwards and power play units on a daily basis. He also helped monitor the off-season and pre-season training regimen and coordinated in-season video work. Beal also served as the Head Coach of the Troy Albany Youth Hockey Minor Midget AAA team. After graduating in from Union in 2005, Beal spent three years coaching various youth hockey teams and running summer camps with the Schenectady Youth Hockey Association.
A four-year letterwinner at Union, Beal recorded 101 points (27 goals, 74 assists) in four seasons with the Dutchmen. A native of Brantford, Ontario, Beal is one of 19 student-athletes to reach 100 points in the history of the men's ice hockey program. As an assistant captain in 2004-05, Beal led Union to its first regular season sweep of Rensselaer, and its first playoff win in nearly 11 years. He holds the school single-season assists mark (matched by Kelly Zajac in 2010-11) after recording 29 assists in 2002-03, and he is second on the career assists list.
Waimon will join the Pioneers as a volunteer assistant coach this season and work specifically with the goalies. Waimon brings a wealth of experiences working with goalies at all levels of hockey to the SHU program.
He has served as a regional mentor in the Strelow Goaltending Program for USA Hockey as well as the goalie coach for Trinity College's men's and women's ice hockey programs. Working for USA Hockey, he has scouted and recruited goaltenders from the east coast for USNTDP and implemented goaltending training developed by the national program.
Waimon has also served as general manager and coach of Pro Crease Hockey, LLC, Connecticut's largest goaltending specific training facility. He is also the owner and coach of Connecticut Crease. He has also worked at the prep school level, serving as the goalie coach at Westminster School, Avon Old Farms and Salisbury Prep School.
