Pioneers Travel To #17 Rensselaer For Saturday Night Showdown

Sacred Heart Pioneers (2-1-0) at #17 Rensselaer Engineers (1-1-0)

Setting the Scene... Having already matched its win total from a season ago, Sacred Heart opens a stretch of five straight road games on Saturday night at Rensselaer

Last Time Out... The Pioneers scored twice on the power play to win their Atlantic Hockey opener against Bentley 3-1 Wednesday night. Freshmen Mitch Nylen and Justin Danforth each recorded their first two career points in the win. Alex Vazzano made 37 saves for his second win in goal.

All-Time vs. Rensselaer... Rensselaer leads the all-time series 4-3 after its 6-0 win over Sacred Heart at Webster Bank Arena Oct. 12. Prior to Rensselaer's 6-2 win over the Pioneers last season, the previous five games had all been decided by one goal. Both teams have two overtime wins in the all-time series.

Scouting the Engineers... Rensselaer is 1-1 entering this weekend after a 7-2 loss at #4 Boston College last Sunday. The Engineers were tied with the Eagles 1-1 after the first period and fell behind 4-2 after two. Milos Bubela and Jimmy DeVito scored the Engineer goals as goalies Jason Kasdorf and Scott Diebold combined for 16 saves. Bubela, Matt Tinordi, and Mike Zalewski each led Rensselaer with three points.

By George, He Keeps On Scoring... Junior Drew George scored his third goal of the season Wednesday night against Bentley. He leads Atlantic Hockey in goals after scoring five in the 2012-13 season. 

Welcome Freshmen... Four Sacred Heart freshmen recorded their first career points in Wednesday night's 3-1 win over Bentley. Mitch Nylen and Justin Danforth each had two points in the win. Nylen had a power play goal and an assist while Danforth had two assists. Jordan Minello and Jeff Carroll each had an assist as well. So far this season, Sacred Heart's freshmen have accounted for 13 points in three games (one goal, six assists). 

Especially Good On Special Teams... Sacred Heart has killed 14 of 15 penalties to start the season for a 93.3 penalty kill percentage. The Pioneers are also 3-for-12 on the power play in the first three games, scoring twice with the extra man in Wednesday night's win over Bentley.

Vazzano Named AHA Goaltender of the Week... Alex Vazzano was named the AHA Travel Team USA Goaltender of the Week on Tuesday. Vazzano made 35 saves in Sacred Heart's monumental upset of #1 UMass Lowell 2-1 on Friday night, his first career start for the Pioneers since transferring from Vermont. Twenty-eight of his 35 saves came in the first two periods as Sacred Heart led 1-0. He made two saves in the last three minutes to preserve Sacred Heart's 2-1 lead and give the Pioneers their second win in three years over a top-10 team. He made 37 saves on 38 shots against Bentley on Wednesday night.

Pioneers Receiving Votes In USCHO.Com Poll ... Sacred Heart received five votes in the latest USCHO.com Poll. The Pioneers became the first Atlantic Hockey team to beat the #1 team in the country in the regular season last Friday night with a 2-1 win at UMass Lowell. The win was also Sacred Heart's first over a Hockey East school.
