Setting the Scene... Fresh off a series sweep of Army last weekend, the Sacred Heart hockey team looks to continue its current winning ways when it hosts RIT for a weekend series at Milford Ice Pavilion.
Last Time Out... The Pioneers dominated the first period last Saturday night against Army at Danbury Ice Arena, outshooting the Black Knights 17-5 in taking a 2-0 lead. Sacred Heart went on to win the game 4-1. Ben Lake scored a goal in his third consecutive game as Justin Danforth had two assists for the second game in a row. Andrew Bodnarchuk made 31 saves in goal.
All-Time vs. RIT... RIT leads the all-time series with Sacred Heart 14-4-1. The Tigers are unbeaten in their last seven games against the Pioneers, including a sweep of Sacred Heart last season in Rochester, N.Y. Sacred Heart last beat RIT on Feb. 6, 2010 by a score of 5-4 at Milford Ice Pavilion. It was the Tigers' last loss before going on a 12-game winning streak that included an Atlantic Hockey Tournament title and Frozen Four appearance.
Pioneers On A Roll... Sacred Heart is on its first winning streak since February 2012 after sweeping last weekend's series with Army. It was the Pioneers' first weekend series sweep since beating the Black Knights by identical 5-3 scores Feb. 24-25, 2012. The Pioneers scored 10 goals this past weekend.
Lake On a Three-Game Goal-Scoring Streak... Junior forward Ben Lake has scored a goal in each of the last three games, his first three markers of the season. He scored a power play goal at Yale on Nov. 16, a shorthanded goal for Sacred Heart's first in the 6-5 win at Army on Nov. 22, and scored the Pioneers' fourth goal last Saturday. The line of Lake, Drew George, and freshman Daniel Lisi combined for four goals and four assists against Army last weekend.
Bodnarchuk Named AHA Goaltender of the Week... Junior goaltender Andrew Bodnarchuk was named the Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Week on Tuesday after earning two wins in goal against Army last weekend. Bodnarchuk made 20 saves on 22 shots in relief of Alex Vazzano on Friday as the Pioneers came back to win 6-5. Bodnarchuk then started Saturday's game, making 31 saves on 32 shots as Sacred Heart beat Army 4-1. In two games last weekend, Bodnarchuk posted a 1.67 goals against average and a .944 save percentage.
Danforth Dishing Assists... Freshman forward Justin Danforth had a pair of two-assist games against Army last weekend, giving him 10 assists on the season. Danforth leads Sacred Heart, as well as all Atlantic Hockey freshmen, with 12 points. He has had four multiple-point games this season, tops among the Pioneers.
Scouting the Tigers... RIT enters the weekend 2-7-2 after splitting a pair of games with St. Lawrence this weekend. The Tigers dropped the opener last Friday 5-3 before beating St. Lawrence 6-4 on Saturday. Dan Schuler had two goals in the win with Brad McGowan posting a three-game night on a goal and two assists. Mike Colavecchia leads RIT with 11 points (6G, 5A) and four power play goals. Six other Tigers have seven points.
