MILFORD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's hockey team was able to force overtime on Sunday against Robert Morris at Milford Ice Pavilion, but the visiting Colonials scored 16 seconds into the extra period to win 2-1.
Both goalies – Alex Vazzano (Trumbull, Conn.) for Sacred Heart (5-15-0, 4-9-0 AHA) and Terry Shafer for Robert Morris (4-12-2, 4-5-2 AHA) – were on their games in the first period. Neither backstop allowed a goal in the opening period, with Vazzano making 10 saves and Shafer nine. The Colonials had the best opportunity to score with 6:42 left in the first period. David Rigatti fired a shot on net that was saved by Vazzano. Jay Llewelyn put the rebound immediately back on net and Vazzano sprawled across his crease to stop his shot.
The Colonials got on the scoreboard six minutes into the second period. Ben Robillard deflected a John Rey shot in front of the net and in to make the score 1-0. Sacred Heart responded 51 seconds later. Senior captain Chad Filteau (Regina, Sask.) put in the rebound of his own shot past Shafer to tie the game 1-1. The Pioneers had four power plays in the middle period but could not score with the extra man as the two teams headed into the third period tied.
Robert Morris had a 5-on-3 power play early in the third period, but Sacred Heart held the Colonials to three shots to keep the game tied 1-1. The Pioneers had a pair of power plays in the third period. Evan Jasper (Whitby, Ont.) had a breakaway chance stopped by Shafer and Jordan Minello (Sweaburg, Ont.) hit a goal post during those two power plays. The Colonials had two shots in the final minute to win the game in regulation but Vazzano stopped both chances by Scott Jacklin and Cody Wydo to force overtime. Robert Morris won the opening faceoff of overtime and scored 16 seconds into the period. Zac Lynch found Jacklin on the left post and Jacklin hammered home the game-winning goal.
The Colonials outshot Sacred Heart 37-31 for the game. For the second straight game, neither team scored on the power play. The Pioneers were 0-for-6 on the power play and held Robert Morris scoreless on four power plays. Vazzano made 35 saves for Sacred Heart as Shafer had 30 for Robert Morris.
Sacred Heart opens a four-game road trip on Saturday, Jan. 11 with a 3:05 p.m. game at Canisius.
