Game Notes

Setting the Scene... Sacred Heart heads back out on the road this weekend, travelling to Colorado Springs to take on Air Force in a weekend series. 

Last Time Out... The Pioneers came back from 2-0 down 2:50 into Sunday's game at Canisius to win 3-2 to salvage a series split at Canisius. Will Rayner tied the game 2-2 with a power play goal in the second period, with Drew George scoring the game-winning goal with 3:01 remaining in the third.

All-Time vs. Air Force... The Falcons lead the overall series with Sacred Heart 19-6-4. Air Force has won the six meetings against the Pioneers. Sacred Heart took three points from Air Force Jan. 7-8, 2011, winning 4-2 and skating to a 5-5 tie. 

Last Meeting... Air Force broke a 1-1 tie with four unanswered goals in the second period on Jan. 20, 2013, winning 6-3 at Webster Bank Arena. Chad Filteau and Brian Sheehan both had a goal for Sacred Heart. Cole Gunner had a goal and two assists for Air Force.

One Goal... Sacred Heart's last four games have all been decided by one goal, with the Pioneers going 1-3 in that span. The Pioneers led 4-2 after the second period Saturday before Canisius came back with three unanswered goals to win 5-4. Sacred Heart returned the favor by coming back from 2-0 down on Sunday to win 3-2. 

Danforth Among Top Atlantic Hockey Rookies... Freshman forward Justin Danforth leads Sacred Heart with 15 assists and 17 points. He entered the week tied with AIC's David Norris for the Atlantic Hockey rookie scoring lead. Danforth is one of six freshmen in the nation to lead their team, or be tied for the team lead, in scoring. He has had six multiple-point games this season, tops among the Pioneers. Danforth had two assists in both games last weekend at Canisius.

Rayner Back On The Scoresheet... After going nine games without a goal, junior defenseman Will Rayner scored a goal in both games last weekend at Canisius. He know has six goals on the season, leading all Atlantic Hockey defensemen in goals. Five of Rayner's six goals this season have come on the power play. 

By George, He Wins Games... Drew George scored the game-winning goal on Sunday at Canisius, his third game-winning tally of the season. He also had the game-winner in the season opener at UMass Lowell on Oct. 11 and in the 6-5 win at Army on Nov. 22. After having just one point in the seven games prior to the Canisius series, George had a goal and an assist against the Golden Griffins. He is tied for the team lead in goals with six and is second on the team in points with 12. 

Scouting the Falcons... Picked to finish second in the preseason AHA Coaches' Poll, Air Force is currently tied for third with UConn in the standings with 17 points. The Falcons swept their series last weekend at Army, winning by scores of 3-1 and 4-2. Junior forward Chad Demers leads Air Force with 10 goals and 25 points. Cole Gunner has a team-high 16 assists. Goaltender Jason Torf is fifth in Atlantic Hockey with a 2.59 goals against average and a .914 save percentage.
