WORCESTER, Mass. – The Sacred Heart men's hockey team allowed five unanswered goals Saturday night in a 6-1 loss to the Holy Cross Crusaders at the Hart Center.
Both Sacred Heart (8-19-0, 7-14-0 AHA) and Holy Cross (8-17-3, 7-11-3 AHA) had nine shots on goal in the first period, but it was the Crusaders who got on the scoreboard in the first period. Adam Schmidt scored on the power play with 9:07 to play in the period, with assists from Shayne Stockton and Jack Bolton, to make the score 1-0. The Pioneers had a five-minute power play late in the first period, but were held scoreless.
Sacred Heart tied the game 1-1 at the 7:55 mark of the second period. Justin Danforth (Oshawa, Ont.) scored his fourth goal of the season with an assist from Jeff Carroll (Kingston, Ont.) to even the game. Holy Cross took back the lead late in the period, scoring back-to-back power play goals. Schmidt scored with 2:58 remaining in the second, with Brett McKinnon making the score 3-1 1:36 later. The Crusaders added three goals in the third period to win 6-1 and earn a split of the weekend series.
Holy Cross outshot Sacred Heart 36-32 for the game, going 4-for-6 on the power play. The Pioneers were 0-for-5 with the man advantage. Derek Kump made 31 saves for the Crusaders as Andrew Bodnarchuk made 26 for Sacred Heart.
The Pioneers go back on the road on Friday, Feb. 14 to open a home-and-home series at AIC at 7:05 p.m. Saturday's game between the Pioneers and Yellow Jackets at Milford Ice Pavilion will have an 8:05 p.m. puck drop.
