FAIRFIELD, Conn.—Sacred Heart senior assistant captain Justin Danforth signed an amateur tryout agreement with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League, affiliate of the New York Islanders, on Wednesday.
Danforth led the Pioneers in points with 32 and in assists with 22 along the way to earning Atlantic Hockey First Team All-Conference honors this season. He garnered Atlantic Hockey All-Conference Second Team honors as a junior, leading the Pioneers with 20 goals and 41 points. Danforth was the 2014 Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Year in his first season with the Pioneers. He finished his career with 42 goals and 82 assists for 124 career points in 147 career games played. Danforth ranks seventh all-time in program history in points and fifth all-time with 82 career assists.
"This is a great opportunity for Justin and one he richly deserves," said head coach CJ Marottolo. "His work ethic and dedication to our program is being rewarded with a chance to play at the next level and I couldn't be any happier for him. Our entire program wishes him the best of luck."
Danforth is excited for the opportunity to play close to the place he has called home for the last four seasons.
"It's a great start to a new chapter, it is going to take a lot of work," said Danforth. "It's great being able to go to class and play pro hockey. Obviously playing in Webster Bank Arena, it's nice not having to jump into a new arena and I know a couple of guys there.".
He credits the Sacred Heart coaching staff and teammates on helping prepare for the professional ranks.
"The coaches and my teammates really helped push me along the way," added Danforth. "The coaches always pushing in practice and weight room to get better every day and learn something every day."
After completing his four-year career with the Pioneers earlier this month, Danforth signed an ATO with the Reading Royals of the East Coast Hockey League. He impressed in his short time with the Royals, recording three points in three games against the Brampton Beast this past weekend. Danforth recorded his first professional goal on March 10, 2017 against the Beast.
The Sound Tigers are in action all three days this weekend beginning on Friday as they begin on the road against the Providence Bruins on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Bridgeport will return home to Webster Bank Arena on Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop against the Utica Comets. On Sunday, the Sound Tigers host the Hershey Bears at 3:00 p.m.
