PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—Sacred Heart men's ice hockey junior goaltender Sammy Bernard was named to the Maccabi USA open men's ice hockey team earlier this month for the 20th World Maccabiah Games that will take place July 4-18 in Israel.
Bernard joins a roster of 22 men's ice hockey student-athletes from around the country. He is one of nine division one players on the roster and is joined by fellow Atlantic Hockey student athletes, Eric Israel of Robert Morris and Joseph Shecter of Army West Point.
He made two appearances between the pipes for the Pioneers during his freshman season. Bernard made three saves in 20:00 of action at Mercyhurst on January 9, 2015. Prior to SHU, he played in 39 games for the Islanders Hockey Club of the USPHL Premier in 2013-14, starting in 18 games and finished the season with a 3.14 goals against average and an .898 save percentage.
The World Maccabiah games features 8,750 athletes from 80 countries, participating in 43 sports.
