Rakhmatov & Melconian Participate in Columbus Blue Jackets Development Camp

FAIRFIELD, Conn.—Rising sophomore Ruslan Rakhmatov and incoming freshman Mel Melconian of the Sacred Heart men's hockey team are set to participate in the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League development camp this week.  

The camp will run from June 26-29 at the OhioHealth Ice Haus, the team's practice facility.

"We are very excited that Ruslan and Mel will be participating in the Columbus Blue Jackets developmental camp." said head coach CJ Marottolo. "This is a great opportunity for them to learn and grow as young men and hockey players, they both want to play hockey at the professional level and this is a great step." 

Rakhmatov Profile

  • Skated in 35 games in his rookie season at SHU
  • Recorded 13 points on two goals and 11 assists from the blue line
  • Tallied first two points of his career with a multi-assist game against Union on October 15
  • Became the first SHU freshman since 2011 to record three helpers in a game on February 11 against Canisius

Melconian Profile

  • Spent the 2016-17 season with the the Aurora Tigers of the Ontario Junior Hockey League
  • Earned the 2016-17 OJHL Rookie of the Year award
  • Tallied 29 goals and 30 assists for 59 points in 51 games
  • Led all OJHL Rookies in scoring
  • Top 10 in the league in goals scored
  • Recorded 14 multi-point games, five of which were multi-goal efforts
