FAIRFIELD, Conn.— Alumni Evan Jasper and Jordan Minello were named Student-Athletes of the Year as the Sacred Heart men's hockey team had 22 student-athletes named to the 2016-17 Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team on Wednesday. Jasper & Minello were among the 12 players named Student-Athletes of the Year, recording a perfect 4.0 GPA this past year as announced by the league office.
"We are very proud of both Jordan and Evan, they are the epitome of what a student athlete should be." said head coach CJ Marottolo. "They have set the standard for what we expect of our young men both off and on the ice."
Jasper recorded nine goals and 12 assists in his last season for SHU. He picked up the first game winning goal of the season in the Pioneers 2-1 win over Merrimack on October 9. Jasper had a three-game point streak from Nov. 22 – Dec. 2, he netted two goals and four helpers during that stretch. He never missed a game in his collegiate career and in the Pioneers final game of the year on March 5 against Bentley he set the program's all-time games played mark at 148. After the season, Jasper made his professional debut with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits, the ECHL affiliate for the New York Rangers. He skated in 11 contests, scoring one goal and dishing out one assist. Jasper graduated in May with degrees in Finance and Business Economics.
Minello netted a career-high 17 goals in his final campaign with the Pioneers. He recorded multi-goal performances in three straight games from Nov. 22 – Dec. 2. Minello recorded the 50th goal of his career in game three of SHU's playoff series against Bentley on March 5. He ended his career tied for fifth all-time in program history with 144 games played and his 50 career goals is good for seventh all-time. Minello graduated in May with degrees in Finance and Business Economics.
207 student-athletes have been named to the 2016-17 Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team, two shy of the record 209 set last season. Five of the 11 member institutions placed at least 20 student-athletes on the 2016-17 All-Academic Team. AIC and Mercyhurst both having 23 representatives. Followed by SHU with 22 names on the list then 21 from Robert Morris, and 20 from Bentley.
Junior Kory Kennedy earned his third All-Academic team selection. Recent graduate Jeff Carroll, junior Nathan Perry and sophomores Jackson Barliant, Liam Clare, Zach De Concilys and Mike Crocock all became two-time All-Academic team selections.
Alumnus Nick Lotito and sophomore Stephen Hladin earned their first All-Academic honors. Freshmen Vito Bavaro, Hunter Fargey, Christian Lloyd, Max Luukko, Austin McIlmurray, Ruslan Rakhmatov and Zach Tsekos all were named to the All-Academic Team.
To qualify for the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team, student-athletes must post a 3.0 grade point average or higher in all of the academic semesters during which his team was actively competing.
