BOSTON, Mass.— The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team suffered a 7-0 shutout loss to No. 20/13 Northeastern University on Saturday night. The Huskies (2-0) picked up the series sweep over the Pioneers (0-2) in the first ever meetings between the two schools.
Sophomore Zach Tsekos and freshman Marc Johnstone led the Pioneers with four shots each. Northeastern held the 35-18 edge over SHU. Sacred Heart went 0-for-4 on the power play while the Huskies were 2-for-7. Junior Brett Magnus made 21 saves in 40 minutes of action.
The Turning Point
The Huskies offense seemed comfortable on its home ice after netting seven goals in the series opener. Northeastern got the scoring with back-to-back goals by Dylan Sikura in the opening ten minutes. The game was put away later in the first as Northeastern scored two goals in 68 seconds on the four-on-four play by Matt Filipe & Grant Jozefek. The Pioneers couldn't escape the deficit, only firing 11 shots on goal in the remaining two periods including just three shots in the third.
How They Scored...
3:47 1st Period- After drawing a slashing penalty early in the contest, the Northeastern power play unit got to work as Sikura fired home the assist from Adam Gaudette to the top right post.
9:31 1st Period- The Pioneers offense turned over the puck in the Huskies zone. Sikura picked up the puck resulting in the 2-on-1 rush for Northeastern. Sikura took the puck in himself and beat senior Nathan Perry up and over blocker side to the left post for the score.
16:23 1st Period- Garett Cecere found Matt Filipe in the neutral zone on the four-on-four. Filipe drove in and fired from the left circle and nailed the right post for the score.
17:31 1st Period – SHU controlled the puck into the Northeastern zone but a dump into the net was deflected by Eric Williams. Grant Jozefek picked up the turnover in the neutral zone and took the puck in for the breakaway score.
11:25 2nd Period – Filipe was the lead man on the rush by the Huskies and worked the puck below the goaline. He found Zach Solow in stride at the doorstep for the 5-0 lead.
18:34 2nd Period – On the power play advantage yet again, Sikura with the silky cross-ice feed to Gaudette who fired the short side one-timer beating Magnus to the left post.
1:20 3rd Period – Filipe attempted the backhanded shot but was denied by Magnus. Solow was there for the rebound shot as he was falling down for the final goal.
- Pioneers suffered first shutout since falling to Bentley 4-0 last season on February 17, 2017.
- Freshman defender Marcus Joseph was the seventh rookie to make his debut this season for SHU.
- Freshman Marc Johnstone leads SHU with nine shots on goal through the opening series.
- Sacred Heart's 46 penalty minutes was the most penalty minutes in a game since committing 59 minutes against Holy Cross on February 26, 2016.
The Pioneers will host Nutmeg State rival, UConn in its home opener at Webster Bank Arena on Saturday, October 14. The puck is set to drop at 7:05 p.m.
