Pioneers Shutout On Senior Night By RIT

BRIDGEPORT, Conn.— The Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey team was unable to stop the high powered RIT offense, falling 3-0 on senior night at Webster Bank Arena.

The Pioneers (10-17-4, 8-13-4 AHA) three-game win streak was severed by the Tigers (14-15-2, 13-11-1 AHA) with a four-goal showing by Erik Brown on Saturday night. RIT pushed its win streak to four with the win in the series opener.

Prior to the puck drop, SHU honored the two seniors in the class of 2018. Kory Kennedy and Nathan Perry were recognized for their four years as Pioneers.

The Pioneers fired just 18 shots on goal in the game all stopped by the RIT's Christian Short. Sophomore Zach Tsekos led the team with four shots on goal. Brett Magnus recorded 18 saves in the loss for SHU.

Turning Point…

RIT opened the game as Brown fired the wide-open wrist shot in the slot at 5:39. The Tigers drew the fortune of the five-on-three power play in the tail end of the first as Brown lit the lamp once again with his second of the night on the rebound shot.

The goals didn't stop there for Brown as he was at the doorstep yet again to kick off the second period with a goal at 1:05 for RIT's third straight goal and his second straight hat-trick. The Pioneers attack fired a game-high eight shots in the middle period as Kennedy had the closest scoring chance ring off the left post just over the halfway mark.

The Tiger attack ended the game with Jake Hamacher putting home the breakaway score at 10:52 before Brown buried his fourth goal at 14:13 to seal the game. SHU went 0-for-4 on the man advantage.

How They Scored…

5:39 – 1st Period: RIT 1, SHU 0: The Tigers got on the board early in the first period as Gabe Valenzuela sent a pass from behind the back of the net out to the middle of the slot to the empty SHU zone. Brown fired the wrist shot past Magnus to take the early lead.

19:57- 1st Period: RIT 2, SHU 0: RIT earned the five-on-three power play off a pair of Pioneer penalties late in the first period. The Tigers rushed into the zone with the final seconds ticking away, working the puck along the point. Myles Powell sent in the shot from atop the right circle, Magnus made the stop but couldn't corral the rebound from Brown for the putback.

1:05 – 2nd Period: RIT 3, SHU 0: Off the expired penalty, The Tigers moved the puck with ease along the edge of the zone. Norrish fired home the slap shot from the feed by Powell at the top of the point. Magnus once again made the save but Brown was still a force at the doorstep, burying the puck home for the hat trick.

10:52 – 3rd Period: RIT 4, SHU 0: After the Pioneers won the faceoff they looked to dump the puck in at the Tigers blue line. Shawn Cameron sticked down the attempt as the puck trickled back to Dan Willett. He sent tapered the puck out to Hamacher for the breakaway as the forward chipped in his second shot past the outstretched Magnus.

14:13 – 3rd Period: RIT 5, SHU 0: The Tigers went on the three-on-two rush into the Pioneers zone as Powell led the attack in. He sent the pass back to Valenzuela who sent his pass out to Brown at the left circle for the one-timer past Perry for his fourth of the game.
