Men's Ice Hockey Set For Home at Home Series With Army West Point

Setting the Scene... The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team continues Atlantic Hockey League play this weekend as they face off against Army West Point for a home at home matchup. 

Last Time Out...The Pioneers split a two game series at Bentley this past weekend. SHU took the first game by a final score of 3-2 while the Pioneers were edged in the second by a score of 3-2 in overtime. In the first game, three different Pioneers scored as redshirt junior Jason Cotton and freshman Austin Magera and Ryan Steele each tallied goals for the Pioneers to earn the team a 3-2 victory. Magera's shorthanded goal was the eventual game winner to help earn SHU its first win of the season.

Last Meeting...The Pioneers fell in its last match-up to Army that occurred on February 24, 2018. The Pioneers cut the deficit to one with 9:09 to go in regulation but were unable to find the equalizer against the Black Knights in the 4-3 loss. Vito Bavaro and Austin McIlmurray along with senior Kory Kennedy found the back of the net after SHU was held scoreless in the loss. Zach Tsekos recorded a multi-assist game for SHU with Bavaro and co-captain Mike Crocock and Josh Allan also dishing out assists. Junior Brett Magnus recorded 13 saves in goal for the Pioneers.

Scouting The Black Knights... Army enters the 2018-19 season after concluding the 2017-18 season by falling in the quarterfinals of Atlantic League Hockey tournament Air Force two games to one. The team returns 21 players including the teams leader in goals from last season Michael Wilson. Wilson tallied 18 goals for the Black Knights last season. Army waspicked to finish four slots ahead of SHU at number six in the Atlantic Hockey Preseason Poll.

Freshman Aid In Pioneers First Victory of the Season...Freshman Austin Magera and Ryan Steele each scored their first collegiate goalsagainst Bentley on Friday Nov. 3 as the team defeated Bentley by a score of 3-2.The win gave SHU its first overall and Atlantic League win of the season.Magera's goal was scored in the third quarter while the team was shorthandedwhich helped sealed the win for the Pioneers.

Pioneers Honor Military on Satuday afternoon...As a thank you for Veterans, all active military and veterans will receive free admission at the Webster Bank Box Office on Saturday. Guests of veterans will receive discounted $5 tickets when purchased together.
