Storrs, CT- Erik Boisvert (Drummondville, QC) put in his eighth goal of the season 1:15 into the overtime period as Sacred Heart extended its unbeaten streak to 11 games Friday night with a 4-3 victory over the Huskies. Nick Johnson added his nation leading 20th goal of the season in the first period and Dave Jarman (Toronto, ON) chipped in two assists. Steven Legatto (Kelowna, BC) made 22 saves to earn the victory.
Connecticut (4-19-3, 4-13-3 AHA) got on the board first 8:39 into the opening period as Justin Hernandez lit the lamp on a two-on-one opportunity with the primary assist from Jason Krispel. The Pioneers would even the score 2:28 later as Patrick Knowlton (Colorado Springs, CO) went top shelf for his eighth goal of the season. SHU created the scoring chance forcing a turnover on the forecheck.
Sacred Heart (12-9-4, 10-6-3 AHA) would take the lead as Johnson found himself alone in the slot in transition and perfectly placed his shot just under the crossbar. Jarman earned assists on both SHU goals in the first period, giving him 26 on the season. The Huskies would have two more odd man rushes in the period but were stopped once by defenseman Corey Laurysen (Ottawa, ON) and once turned away by a Legatto pad save.
The Pioneers would have three power play opportunities in the second period but could not find the net on the man advantage. SHU would have 31 seconds of a five-on-three power play but the Huskies would clear the puck off the draw and kill off both penalties. Connecticut would draw the game level at two 5:54 into the middle stanza. Mike Coppola raced into the SHU zone and fired on goal, his shot rang off the left post and bounced behind the red line for his fourth goal of 2009-10.
Sacred Heart would regain a one goal advantage just before the end of the period. Freshman Eric Delong (Oakville, MB) threw a pass in front from behind the net that hit UConn goaltender Garrett Bartus. The puck stopped in the crease and sophomore Matt Gingera (Winnipeg, MB) capitalized for his fifth marker of the year.
The Huskies would score the only goal of the third period off the stick of defenseman Chris Waterstradt. Sacred Heart failed to clear the defensive zone as Waterstradt intercepted a pass just inside the blue line. The red shirt sophomore put a wrist shot on goal from the perimeter that snuck past Legatto to tie the game at three. The Pioneers would have several scoring chances just before the end of regulation but Bartus made three strong saves to send the game to overtime.
Boisvert slotted the game winning goal just 1:15 into the extra session as he entered the zone on an odd man rush with David Berube (Quebec City, QC). The senior forward bluffed the pass before turning to snap a shot on net. The puck bounced off the goaltender’s shoulder and into the net to provide SHU the dramatic 4-3 victory.
The two teams meet again tomorrow night in the series finale in Storrs, CT. The Pioneers will look to extend the nation’s longest unbeaten streak to 12 games against UConn, face-off is set for 7:35 pm.
