Nick Johnson (Windsor, CT) and Steven Legatto (Kelowna, BC) of the men's ice hockey team each picked up a monthly Atlantic Hockey award, announced by the league office today. Johnson scored 11 goals and posted 20 total points in January to be named player of the month. Legatto used a 1.98 goals against average and a 9-0-2 record to earn the goaltender of the month award.
Johnson, a senior forward, leads the nation in goals with 21 and goals per game at 0.81. He set the Sacred Heart Division I record for goals in a single season, previously held at 19 by Alexandre Parent and Pierre-Luc O'Brien. In January, Johnson notched the game winning goal against Air Force as SHU swept the Falcons for the first time in program history. He also netted the game winner against Canisius and a game tying marker versus Army. Johnson has scored at least one goal in each of the Pioneers last seven games and notched seven multi-point games for January.
Legatto, who leads Atlantic Hockey and ranks 11th in the NCAA with a .643 win percentage, posted his first career shutout January 9th against Army. The freshman netminder also ranks 5th in the AHA in saves with 651 and a save percentage of .913 for 2009-2010. Legatto tallied at least 30 saves six times in January, he holds the longest unbeaten streak for a goaltender in Sacred Heart history.
The pair will lead the Pioneers into a weekend series against first place RIT at the Milford Ice Pavilion. The puck is set to drop at 7:05 pm Friday night.
