FAIRFIELD, CT – Evan Morgan played hero twice for the Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team against Hartford Saturday night. Morgan, a senior attack from Ashburn, VA, tied the game at six in the final second of regulation before netting the game winner 1:47 into the overtime frame. The Pioneers defeated the Hawks 7-6 in front of a boisterous Campus Field crowd.
Sacred Heart trailed 6-3 at the half and held Hartford scoreless in the entire second half plus overtime. For both side goals were hard to come by in the second, but SHU senior attack Timmy Katz (Freeport, NY) scored his second and third goals of the game to bring the Pioneers within one and then set up Morgan for the game tying score.
In the first quarter, freshman Bryan Badolato (West Islip, NY) put SHU on the board first less than three minutes into the contest. Hartford junior Sean King and sophomore Aidan Genik scored a goal each to put the Hawks ahead. Pioneer senior Jon Flood (Hauppauge, NY) notched his 13th goal of the year to tie the game at two. Freshman Jared Franze put Hartford back on top with a goal in the final minute of the stanza.
The Hawks dominated the second quarter as they outscored Sacred Heart 3-1. Genik added a goal and an assist in the period. Sophomore Carter Bender pushed the Hartford lead to 6-3 as he found the back of the net with just two seconds remaining on the clock.
For the game, Katz scored three goals and collected one assist. He now leads the team in scoring with 22 goals and seven assists. Morgan is third on the team as he pushed his season total to 16 points, with nine scores and seven assists.
Senior netminder Tom Trgo (N. Merrick, NY) saved 12 shots to preserve the victory for Sacred Heart. The Pioneers peppered goalie sophomore Scott Bement all game long as he was good for 18 in the loss.
SHU outshot Hartford 36-25 for the entire game.
The Pioneers return to action at Mount St. Mary's at 3:00 pm on Wednesday March 31.
