FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Sacred Heart head men's lacrosse coach Tom Mariano has announced that Chris Miller and Scott Smith will be joining his staff as assistant coaches for the 2011 season.
Miller will serve as the Pioneers' offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator. He comes to Sacred Heart after a brief stint at Washington and Lee University, in Virginia. Prior to that he was an assistant coach at Virginia Military Institute. At VMI he was the offensive coordinator for the Keydets in the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Miller got his start in coaching at his alma mater Wesley College, in Delaware, where the assistant men's lacrosse coach from 2006-2008.
At Wesley Miller earned a degree in physical education, while playing for the men's lacrosse team. Before graduating in 2005, he was a four-year member of the team and was a 2003 and 2005 First Team All-Pennsylvania Athletic Conference selection. Throughout his collegiate career, Miller totaled 144 points.
Scott Smith joins coach Tom Mariano's staff for the 2011 season in the primary role of goalkeeper coach for the Pioneers. Smith spent the last two seasons coaching the boy's lacrosse team at Staples High School. In 2007, he founded Unparalleled Lacrosse, LLC. Unparalleled Lacrosse conducts recreational and competitive lacrosse programs for elementary through high school aged boys and girls. The program is intended for beginners through advanced skilled players.
Smith graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 2007 with a degree in sociology. Was a member of the Blue Jays men's lacrosse team from 2002-2005. Participated in three NCAA Final Fours during his career and was a member of Johns Hopkins' 2005 National Championship team. Between the pipes, he accumulated a career .713 save percentage and a 4.92 goals against average.
Sacred Heart opens the 2011 season at home against former CAA rival Hofstra on February 19.
