POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Last season, the Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team lost an overtime thriller to Marist early in the year, but this time around the Pioneers turned the tables on the Red Foxes and stole a 9-8 overtime win on the road, Saturday afternoon. SHU evened its record at 1-1, while Marist fell to 0-2.
Freshman attack Mike Mawdsley (Innisfil, Ont.) posted the game-winner, unassisted, on his fourth score of the day coming in the final 26 seconds of overtime.
The Pioneers trailed 7-5 late in the third, until Mawdsley brought them within one on a goal, assisted by classmate Alex Miller (Ridgewood, N.J.) on the man advantage, with just 44 seconds left. Sacred Heart tied the game at seven, midway through the fourth quarter when sophomore Bryan Badolato (West Islip, N.Y.) tallied his second score of the game. The Pioneers grabbed the lead just 15 second later as Mawdsley once again found the back of the net, off a face-off win by sophomore Stephen Kontos (Danvers, Md.).
Sophomore Aedan Herman brought the teams back to even, on a man-up opportunity, with 4:08 remaining in regulation and force the extra frame.
Mawdsley recorded his first collegiate goal late in the first quarter, assisted by freshman Tom Sardelli (Rochester, Minn.), for the lone score on either side in the period.
SHU went up 3-0 with goals from sophomore Trevor Dauses (Glen Arm, Md.) and freshman Cody Marquis (Londonderry, N.H.) in the early moments of the second quarter. Sophomore Jack Doherty put Marist on the board at the 6:05 mark of the quarter. Freshman Tim Caton (East Rochester, N.Y.) and Badolato each netted a goal to move the Pioneer lead to 5-1. The Red Foxes would add one more, with one tick left on the clock before halftime, as senior Corey Zindel found sophomore Connor Rice for the goal.
Marist came out of the locker room hot and put up five straight goals to take a 7-5 lead. Freshman Tucker Nelson found the back of the net for the game-tying goal and sophomore Jim Marks gave the Red Foxes' their first lead of the afternoon.
In the cage, senior Zach Frank (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) provided 14 saves for Sacred Heart. Sophomore Brendan Price came up with 11 saves on the losing side.
The Pioneers return to action next Saturday, March 5, with a 12:00 pm contest against Dartmouth on Campus Field.
