Queens, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team dropped its third straight contest with a 15-7 defeat at St. John's Saturday afternoon. With the loss coming in their final non-conference game of the season, the Pioneers fell to 3-5, while the Red Storm improved to 2-6.
Freshman attack Kevin Cernuto led the St. John's attack with four goals and an assist, while classmate Kieran McArdle added a hat trick and an assist. Junior Charlie Hollenstein, sophomore Brandon Ayers and freshman Keith Switzer all recorded multi-goal games for the Johnnies.
For SHU, freshman attack Mike Mawdsley (Innisfil, Ont.) netted his fourth hat trick of the season to lead the Pioneer offense. Mawdsley is the team's leading goal scorer with 18 and ranks second in total points at 22.
Sophomore attack Bryan Badolato (West Islip, N.Y.) added a pair of scores to lift his season total to 16 and his total for point to 24. Junior midfielders Aaron Lupo (Schenectady, N.Y.) and Matt Ferrino (Orchard Park, N.Y.) each tallied a score.
In net for St. John's, sophomore goalie Jeff Lowman provided eight saves to earn the victory. For Sacred Heart, senior Zach Frank (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) took the loss in a 12-save effort.
The Red Storm outshot the Pioneers 41-32 for the game and held a 33-23 lead in groundballs. St. John's scored twice on extra-man opportunities, while Sacred Heart was held scoreless in three tries.
The Pioneers return to action next Saturday in their first Northeast Conference tilt of the season as they host Wagner under the lights at Campus Field at 7:00 pm.
