Scoreless Third Quarter Buries Men’s Lacrosse

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Leading 3-2 at the half, the Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team came out flat in the third quarter and was outscored 6-0 en route to an 11-7 Northeast Conference loss to Mount St. Mary's at Campus Field, Saturday afternoon.  The loss dropped the Pioneers to 4-6 on the season and evened their conference record to 1-1, while the Mountaineers improved to 5-5 and 2-0.

Mount junior attack Brett Schmidt scored the first goal of the game less than five minutes into the first quarter.  Sacred Heart got on the board five minutes later with a score from sophomore attack Trevor Dauses (Glen Arm, Md.).  SHU took its first lead of the day with three minutes remaining in the frame when sophomore Mike Mawdsley (Innisfil, Ont.) found the back of the net.  With only 19 seconds left in the opening frame, sophomore attack Andrew Scalley pulled the Mountaineers even before the close of the period.

In the second quarter, Mawdsley netted the only goal of the stanza for either side with a man-up score coming just 31 seconds into the period.  Freshman midfielder Alex Miller (Ridgewood, N.J.) put a shot on goal, sophomore attack Eric Madigan (Ashburn, Va.) picked up the loose ball and delivered it to Mawdsley who blasted it into the net.

Mount St. Mary's dominated the third quarter and held the Pioneers scoreless.  Schmidt tallied his second of the day to tie the game at three in the second minute of the period.  Only 37 seconds later, sophomore midfielder Daniel Stranix gave the Mountaineers their first lead since 1-0 and they never looked back.  Junior attack Cody Lehrer would add a pair of scores, one on the man-up, and an assist all in the third.

Madigan ended Sacred Heart's drought with his fourth of the game coming with 12:27 left in the game.  Schmidt added his third and fourth scores of the game, while Lehrer completed the hat trick in the fourth.  The Pioneers had one late surge in them as junior attack Matt King (Brewster, N.Y.) and Mawdsley posted scores with under four minutes to go.

Mawdsley moved into the team lead in goals scored with 21 after posting his fifth hat trick of the season.  He ranks second on the team in total points at 27.  Sophomore attack Bryan Badolato (West Islip, N.Y.), who leads the team with 28 points on 18 goals and 10 helpers, was not active for today's game.

Mount senior goalie T.C. DiBartolo stopped nine shots to earn the win, while SHU senior Zach Frank (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) also turned away nine shots.

The Mountaineers outshot the Pioneers 47-28 for the game, but Sacred Heart held a narrow margin in groundballs, 31-28.

The Pioneers play their final home game of the season next Saturday at 7:00 pm against Bryant on Senior Night.
