Sacred Heart Men's Lacrosse Names Mike Gongas Assistant Coach
FAIRFIELD, CT (September 15, 2011) - Sacred Heart men's lacrosse head coach Tom Mariano announced that Mike Gongas has been named an assistant coach for the 2011-12 season. Gongas spent last spring as the head coach at Presbyterian College and was the interim head coach in 2010.
Gongas spent two season's prior at Presbyterian as an assistant coach for Jason Childs from 2008 through 2009 before being named the interim head coach. As an assistant, he worked coordinating the offense and serving as the recruiting coordinator. He worked with scheduling and preparing individual workouts, preparing scouting reports and implementing a strength and conditioning program and focusing on academics.
A 2007 graduate of Adelphi University, Gongas received a degree in Physical Education and spent a semester as an assistant coach at Suffolk Community College where he was the offensive coordinator. He played at Adelphi for two seasons under head coach Sandy Kapatos, earning All-American and All-Conference honors as a senior. Before transferring to Adelphi to pursue a physical education degree, Gongas played two years of lacrosse at the University of Massachusetts for head coach Greg Cannella, where in 2005 the Minutemen advanced to the the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals losing to eventual champion Johns Hopkins.
As a player, he spent five summers playing Box lacrosse in Ontario and Alberta and participated in the 2007 NLL combine in Colorado, where he signed a contract with the New York Titans. He was drafted by the Long Island Lizards in the 2007 Supplemental Draft and participated in their 2008 training camp.
