Setting the Scene... After dropping its season opener at Hofstra last Saturday, the Sacred Heart (0-1) men's lacrosse returns to the road for a 1 p.m. game at Marist (1-0). The Pioneers are 21-10 all-time against current members of the MAAC Lacrosse League.
All-Time Series vs. Marist... Sacred Heart leads the all-time series against the Red Foxes 8-4. Marist has won two of the last three meetings, including last season's 12-10 victory at Campus Field. The last four meeting between Sacred Heart and Marist have been decided by a combined five goals. The Pioneers won the last meeting between the two teams in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. 9-8 in overtime on Feb. 26, 2011.
Last Time Out ... The Pioneers opened the season with a 14-9 loss at Hofstra on Feb. 16. Mike Mawdsley led Sacred Heart with three goals as Shane Foley added a pair of tallies. Hofstra led 10-3 at halftime, but Sacred Heart cut the deficit to three, 12-9, with less than three minutes to play.
Monster Numbers From Mawdsley... Junior attack Mike Mawdlsey picked up where he left off last season, scoring three goals at Hofstra last Saturday. His three goals came on just four shots, with all three attempts at goal finding the back of the net. In 27 career games, Mawdsley has 17 multi-goal efforts including nine last season.
Marquis Does It All... Cody Marquis had a goal and an assist last Saturday at Hofstra, the ninth time in his career that the junior attackman had both a goal and an assist in a game. Last season, Marquis had a balanced statline of 17 goals and 18 assists for a team-high 35 assists. He was sixth in the NEC in assists per game and eighth in points per game.
Scouting Marist... Picked to finish second in the MAAC Lacrosse League this season, the Red Foxes opened the season with a 13-9 win over Stony Brook at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field last Saturday. Senior attack Connor Rice was named MAAC Player of the Week after scoring three goals with two assists against the Seawolves. Jack Doherty also had three goals and two assists, with Jim Marks and Mike Begley also scoring three goals apiece. Rice, Ethan Fox, and Drew Nesmith were each named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team.
