POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Junior attack Mike Mawdsley (Innisfil, Ont.) tied a career-high on Saturday afternoon with five goals, but the Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team could not overcome a five-goal halftime deficit in a 15-12 loss at Marist.
Mawdsley's five tallies came on just six shots on goal. Junior midfielder Alex Miller (Ridgewood, N.J.) had five assists in the game. Cody Marquis (Londonderry, N.H.) added two goals as both Matt King (Brewster, N.Y.) and Cutty Diamond (Marblehead, Mass.) each had two points on a goal and an assist. Tim Caton (East Rochester, N.Y.) had a game-high nine ground balls as Andrew Newbold (Loveland, Ohio) had six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Stephen Kontos (Danvers, Mass.) won 19 of 28 faceoffs in the game.
Marist (2-0) took a 2-0 lead 3:16 into the game on goals by Gannon Osborn and Drew Nesmith. Sacred Heart (0-2) got on the board with 10:06 to play in the first quarter as Miller assisted on a Marquis man-up goal. The Red Foxes then scored three of the next four goals as a pair of Mike Begley tallies gave Marist a 5-2 lead with 2:58 to play in the opening quarter.
The Pioneers cut the deficit to one as Marquis scored at the end of the first quarter, followed by a Mawdsley marker three minutes into the second, made the score 5-4. Sacred Heart then went on a long scoreless stretch. The Red Foxes capped the half by scoring four unanswered goals, taking a 9-4 lead at halftime. Marist then scored the first three goals of the third quarter, taking a 12-4 lead with 8:19 to play in the period. Sacred Heart finally got back on the scoreboard with 7:43 left in the third on Mawdsley's third goal of the game, assisted by Miller. After a Connor Rice tally made the score 13-5, Sacred Heart scored five unanswered goals to end the third quarter. Mawdsley, Diamond, King, Joe Burek (Kinnelon, N.J.), and Shane Foley (South Brunswick, N.H.) all scored in the run that got the Pioneers within three, 13-10, after three quarters.
The Red Foxes extended the lead to five, 15-10, on goals by Begley and Osborn to start the fourth quarter. Sacred Heart responded with goals by Mawdsley and Eric Crepinsek (Oakville, Ont.) to make the score 15-12 with 5:03 remaining in the game. The Pioneers were stymied the rest of the way as Marist outshot Sacred Heart 14-6 in the final quarter and hung on for the three-goal win.
Each team had 38 shots in the game with Marist putting 25 on net to Sacred Heart's 20. The Pioneers held a slim 39-38 advantage in ground balls, but committed 27 turnovers to the Red Foxes' 19. Sacred Heart was 3-for-9 with the extra-man and held Marist to 0-for-6 in extra man opportunities. Begley led Marist with six points on five goals and an assist. Rice, Osborn, and Jack Doherty each had three points.
Sacred Heart makes its Campus Field debut for the 2013 season on Saturday, March 2 when the Pioneers host Holy Cross for the home opener. The opening faceoff is at 3 p.m.
